Two men rob a bank. They escape by aeroplane, intending to take refuge, until the hunt is called off, in a remote log cabin in Northern Alberta.

But instead of landing in Alberta, they find themselves forced down in a strange county called Yademos. Yademos, with a history of many centuries of peace, is a planned state whose citizens have achieved an advanced state of mental and scientific development.

The accumulated skills and knowledges of adults are grafted (when their possessor's spans of usefulness are over) to the brains of selected children.

But it is a country where the people are under control from the cradle to the grave. A control that is sinister and complete.
